Guwahati: Former Assam DGP and Sahitya Akademi award winning short story writer Kuladhar Saikia has been elected as the 103rd president of the Asom Sahitya Sabha on Thursday, January 2. Saikia won the position with 269 votes in the organisational election held at Hojai during the executive meeting of the literary body yesterday. Saikia will assume office for two years in the next biennial session of the Sabha to be held soon.
As many as seven candidates had filed their nomination for the post of president.
Kuladhar Saikia is retired as the Director General of Assam police on August 31, 2018 and served extension of a three-month service. He was an IPS officer of the 1985 batch.
Saikia studied at Delhi School of Economics and did Ph.D in economics of crime from IIT Guwahati. He is a Fullbright fellow from Pennsylvania State University, USA, and former consultant at World Bank at Washington DC.
On the other hand, writer Mrinalini Devi has been elected as the vice-president of the apex literary body securing 308 votes. She is the mother of Assam cabinet minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Meanwhile, Jadhab Chandra Sharma has been elected as the new general secretary with 323 votes against his rivals Debojit Borah and Hirendra Kalita who got 255 and 26 votes respectively.
