Guwahati: A mass rally was carried out by the youths of Guwahati consisting of scores of school as well as college students raising awareness on climate change. Also called “Fridays For Future” which is a global movement initiated by 16 year old teen climate change activist Greta Thunberg to protest against the world governments’ failure to take sufficient action against global warming.
The rally which was first started in September 21 was organized by a team of six persons and more than 100 people participated in the rally. The strike started with a small introduction and then the rally began from Dighalipukhuri Park Entrance to Cotton College and then back to the park entrance. The protesters raised slogans like, “system change for climate change”, “manuh ahibo, manuh jaabo, prithibi ekhon, ekhone thakibo” (people come, people go, earth is one, and will remain so) etc.
The rally members initiated a strict action by the government whose schemes are just in paper but have beared no fruits as the schemes have proved futile. Speaking at length on the entire rally, one of the oganising members Shirshendu from “The Midway Journey” NGO while speaking to Prag News said that the government though has passed many bills and laws on climate change but most of the laws have not been implemented yet. “Its already November and yet winter hasn’t arrived which shows that global warming is at its height. Considering the situation, the government should take an immediate action on climate change”, added Shirshendu.
Youths carrying placards with creative manifestation spoke out loud on the degrading situation of the environment. Many could be seen adorning themselves in plastic bottles, oxygen masks, painted faces with words attracting passersby to ponder on the coming future of their generation while residing in this ticking climate bomb. Children as young as 10-12 years were actively participating in the rally.
