Digital Desk: A two-month-old young wild elephant perished on Thursday in
the Goalpara district of Assam's Sesapani Bainpara village after becoming mired
in the muck at a rice field.
A herd of about 70 wild elephants wandered into the paddy field in search
of food, according to the residents.
They surmised that one of the baby
elephants got mired in the mud while the herd of elephants wandered towards the
paddy field.
The little elephant was saved by the
community on Thursday morning. They later notified the forest authorities, but
the elephant passed away shortly after.
According to a forest authority, the
baby elephant passed away from weakness. We requested a postmortem from the
veterinarian, and once the report is received, we will be able to determine the
precise cause of death.
He continued, "The baby elephant is
around two months old and came into the paddy field with the group.
Locals claim that the forest service
has not taken any action to prevent the trespassing of such wild elephants into
non-forest regions, and as a result, the gang has devastated hectares of paddy
field.
The villagers alleged that wild elephants frequently stray into
human habitats and demolish homes, schools, and other public property.
"This has been occurring annually, but the state forest
department has not yet taken the necessary action to prevent the elephants from
wandering into human settlements."
The elephant was later interred close to the scene of the tragedy
by locals and the state forest agency.
