Govt will make Assam flood-free in 5 years, Home Minister Amit Shah assures citizens
Due to its location in a part of the country that is prone to heavy rainfall, the state has experienced devastating flood and landslide conditions, which have resulted in over 190 fatalities there as of this summer.

Digital Desk: The Union Home Minister, Amit Shah promised the people of Assam on Saturday that the state will be "flood-free" in the next five years.

"I previously claimed that we had rid Assam of strikes and terrorism during the Assembly elections. Give us five years, and we'll make Assam floods-free. The Assam government has created a programme that, in 5 years, will make flooding in Assam a thing of the past "Amit Shah said at the Khanapara Karyakarta Sammelan in Guwahati.

Shah highlighted on Friday how important flood protection is to the state's prosperity and ability to attract big investors.

"The state must develop a long-term strategy that would provide flood protection for many years to come and not just focus on immediate fixes. The Assam administration needs to develop a clear action plan to preserve, restore, and boost the State's wetlands' holding capacity so that they may also serve as flood storage reservoirs "When reflecting on a meeting he presided over in Guwahati to make the state of Assam flood-free, Mr. Shah said.

Due to its location in a part of the country that is prone to heavy rainfall, the state has experienced devastating flood and landslide conditions, which have resulted in over 190 fatalities there as of this summer.

The deluge in July 2022 had an impact on about 5.39 lakh people in 12 districts.

Additionally, many fish farmers suffered significant losses as a result of the devastating Assam floods in July, and the state government later provided assistance in an effort to revive the state's fish business.

Parimal Suklabaidya, the Assam fisheries minister, told ANI that 80% of fish farmers had experienced severe losses totaling nearly $1,000 crores, which had caused a major setback for the industry.

Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) records from July show that almost 8.9 million people in the state were impacted by the flood and landslides, which up until that point had claimed 192 lives in the state and around 2.40 lakh hectares of crops in 34 districts.

Notably, the state had previously experienced flooding, according to a report from the Flood Reporting and Information Management System (FRIMS), which stated on August 30, 2021, that 3,63,135 people living in 950 villages across 21 Assam districts had been negatively impacted.

According to figures from the Assam government, 64 persons perished in the 2016 floods, 160 perished in 2017, 45 perished in 2018, 101 perished in 2019, and 124 perished in 2020.
