Green signal to Anti-Witch hunt Bill: President Kovind
President Ram Nath Kovind has finally given the green signal for the passing of the Assam Witch Hunting (Prohibition, Prevention and Protection) Bill, 2015.
The Bill makes witch-hunting a cognizable, non-bailable and non-compoundable offence and is said to be strictest in the country against such crime, as per reports.
Assam Assembly had unanimously passed the Assam Witch Hunting (Prohibition, Prevention and Protection) Bill in 2015.
Not only witch-hunting, crimes related to other superstitious beliefs were also brought under the ambit of the Bill. For identifying and calling a person witch, the Bill made provisions for imprisonment upto seven years along with a fine upto to Rs 5 lakh.
According to information, a gazette notification on the Act is likely to be published soon.
It may be mentioned that around 80 women had died since 2006 in witch-hunt attacks in the state, the Assam Government told the house in April 2018.
