Guwahati: Guwahati-based journalist Naresh Mitra passed away at a private hospital early this morning. He is survived by his wife, 5 year old daughter and parents.
Naresh Mitra, a well known journalist for his reportage on environment and wildlife, was brought to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital on November 22. Some unidentified miscreants had attacked Mitra following which there was a huge uproar among the journalists forum of the state.
Mitra was then later shifted to Nemcare Hospital in Guwahati where he was kept under observation in the intensive care unit of the hospital. Well known for his frequent environmental reporting, Mitra was rescued by locals in a critical state with intense bleeding from his head at Rupnagar Shiva Mandir area under Bhangagarh police station in Guwahati.
Although, initially, it was thought to be a case of hit and run, doctors who conducted head surgery of Mitra on Sunday revealed that the injuries in his skull are similar to that of an assault, hence raising suspicion to the whole incident.
The Journalists Forum of Assam has demanded a high level inquiry into the incident.
