Guwahati has air quality monitoring stations at Bamunimaidam, Cotton University, and the airport, among other places in the city.
Digital desk: The citizens of Chandmari, Guwahati express worries about a rising dust pollution problem that developed from intensive building activities, particularly the new flyover construction.
Gokul Bhuyan who serves as the member secretary at the Pollution Control Board, Assam mentioned that flyover construction does not fall under their direct authority but they have distributed guidelines to construction organizations. The construction industries must apply two measures to manage the dust pollution issue: they need to wrap building materials during movement and storage as well as conduct regular water sprinkling to reduce flying dust.
The people living near construction projects have expressed worries about their health conditions. A Chandmari-based professional points out there are too many issues. He said ”I have dust allergy and cannot imagine stepping out in such conditions. I always carry a face mask, and if I forget to bring it, it is a nightmare for me. Since the construction began here, I almost always have a running nose, cough, and experience shortness of breath."
Bhuyan reports that the current air quality is better than the previous year standards. The "moderate" category level average AQI reached 119 in Guwahati according to the data provided by him during the past 24 hours. During the previous year the average value of AQI reached 215 but this year it remains at 119 below the "poor" classification level.
Bhuyan presented multiple solutions including concrete pavement construction from end to end alongside household biofuel promotion and electric-powered public transportation systems to solve the problem. According to him the GMC now operates road sweepers and water sprinklers which were not there few years ago.
The official announced that stricter policies regarding pollution control would enter into effect shortly. He also added that the issue of waste burning requires me to issue an advisory during the upcoming week. The dry conditions require everyone to refrain from all types of burning activities. Street vendors need to prevent the combustion of waste matter that they produce. The public who belong to vulnerable groups should protect themselves with face masks during breaks from outside activities. People need better awareness about plantations and they need to adopt plantation practices according to him.
