Guwahati: The implementation of Motor Vehicles Amendment Act in the city went for a toss when the city witnessed motor bike and scooter riders riding without helmets during the Durga Puja, especially on Vijaya Dashami. Keeping aside the pillion riders, the riders themselves were seen without helmets, regardless of breaking rules.
The sole objective of the Motor Vehicles Amendment Act was to instill fear in the minds of the rule breakers, by giving higher penalties for driving errors for racing and reckless driving to one month imprisonment and up to six months imprisonment for accident related offences.
On the other hand, yesterday, i.e. October 8 was declared as ‘dry day’ by the government on the occasion of ‘Sankardeva Janmotsav’, but some of the local populace were hardly daunted as they played songs such as ‘Char Bottle Vodka’ in full volume in baring speakers. The Dashami day also saw some vibrant crowds bidding adieu to Goddess Durga by dancing and consuming alcohol.
