Guwahati: Hitesh Dev Sarma, Assam Civil Service officer, has been appointed as the new State Coordinator for the National Register of Citizens (NRC). He has replaced Prateek Hajela who was transferred to his state Madhya Pradesh by the Supreme Court on October 18 and will relinquish charge as the NRC coordinator on November 11.
Mr. Sarma was the Secretary of Urban Development and Finance departments until this new appointment. In the initial stages, 5 years ago, he also handled the NRC exercise. He is likely to take charge from Monday.
The updated final NRC, published in August, left out over 1.9 million applicants. The next stage of sending out letters to the ones left out of the final NRC list with the reason for their non inclusion and the process of moving to Foreigners Tribunal will be starting very soon this month.
