Guwahati : Finance Minister of Assam Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted the benefits of the scheme ‘Arundhati’ under which the brides of Assam will get 1 tola gold from the Assam government.
Sarma on February 6th, 2019 announced 1 tola gold for the brides under the scheme ‘Arundhati’ while presenting the Assam Budget 2019-20.
“The benefit under the scheme can be availed upon formal registration of the marriage under Special Marriage (Assam) Rules, 1954,” he said while addressing a public gathering at Dongibil in Bihpuria area of North Lakhimpur on February 25th, 2019.
The benefit will reach the beneficiary right in time for the social marriage. It will be limited to only economically weaker sections, whose annual income is below Rs 5 lakh, irrespective of caste, creed, religion, he further informed. “The scheme will get kick-started from April 2019,” Sarma said.

With the ‘Arundhati Scheme’ the government aims to reduce child marriage. People willing to get 1 tola gold for their daughters have to register at the Government office in which will be mentioned the girl as well as the boy’s age. This way the government will be checking on the legal marriages too.
Also the case of triple talaq will also be taken into consideration as the “Arundhati” scheme is not meant for the boys to gain a hand over their wife’s property but to provide financial sustenance at the time of divorce even if a couple gets divorced. If someone wants to go for triple talaq, he has to go for a formal divorce, which will require paying alimony to the bride. This scheme would support such women to avail the alimony,” he said.
