Guwahati/ 30th April’2018 (Prag News Desk):
In a shocking revelation coming from the state of Assam, which some years ago was revered by many as Dowry proof state, a man has reportedly burnt his wife to death over dowry demands in Hajo.
Sensation prevailed among the locals of Hajo after a woman who was married for about 14 years died after her husband allegedly set her on fire demanding dowry.
Deaths and crimes against women in the state have been increasingly menacingly especially in rape and dowry cases. Dowry deaths have become the core centre of many crimes these days as the influence of the immigrants coming from other states are influencing the local culture of the state which till few years back was free of any dowry cases.
According to a family member of the deceased, the woman identified as Mamoni Deka was being tortured for dowry by her husband and his family for a very long time. Even though Mamoni informed her parents about the issue, her parents asked her to stay with her husband as she was married for at least 14 years.
It was alleged that her husband, Kamal Deka would beat her up almost every day over minor issues.
The torture on the woman went on for months and on April 14 she was set on fire by her husband after the woman denied asking for any dowry or property from her parents. She was immediately shifted to the hospital where she was undergoing treatment.
After being treated for 15 days in hospital, the woman couldn’t survive her injuries and lastly breathed her last yesterday at the hospital.
Presently, the case is under investigation by the police and a case has been registered based on the allegations made by the woman’s family. No arrests have been made so far but interrogation on the family members are being carries out by the police.
