Karbi will be used alongside English in official communication, administration, and education.
Digital Desk: In a landmark move to uphold indigenous identity, a breakthrough occurred when the Government of Assam tagged the Karbi language with administrative language status across Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong districts. The official decision was declared on 19th April after Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma spent two days in the region.
Alongside English, Karbi will now be used in official communication, administration, and education. This significant step for the Karbi community was widely praised by leaders and representatives in education and culture who see this move as a fundamental recognition of the linguistic rights of their people.
Chief Executive Member, Tuliram Ronghang of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) expressed gratitude towards the state government for their visionary and culturally empowering decision. The adoption shows state officials truly honor both the cultural legacy and upcoming objectives of the Karbi people.
Local educators and youth leaders from the region are positively welcomed the decision since it will unify both cultural identity and youth pride and awareness in the Karbi language. The decision to recognize Karbi as an official language has strengthened Karbi’s ethnic identity and created a new basis for our children to feel proud about our ancestral roots, according to a local teaching professional.
The government has started training administrators and is working on creating resources as part of its systematic approach to enable a successful language transition. The implementation will follow a gradual, structured order.
This declaration fulfills long-standing demands from indigenous communities to enhance protection of their languages as well as their official recognition. As Assam continues to respect its various cultural traditions it shows its dedication to embracing both linguistic and cultural inclusion.
The people of this region now envision a time when the Karbi language is not just spoken, but officially celebrated and preserved.
