Guwahati : The prime accused in the alleged assault case of a group of Muslim men and forcing them to utter slogans ‘Jai Shri Ram’ and ‘Pakistan Murdabad’ case in Barpeta district of Assam was arrested from Six mile area in Guwahati.
The person has been identified as 30 year old Debojit Deka. He is a member of Sri Ram Sena, a right wing Hindu group headed by Pramod Muthalik. Deka hails from Sundarbari in Jalukbari of Guwahati. He was arrested on the night of June 21st, 2019 by a joint team of Barpeta and Guwahati Police.
It may be noted, the incident which took place on June 18th, 2019 came to light after a video of the purported attack and the forcible chanting of slogans went viral on social media platforms. Abusing the Muslim men, the attackers themselves show the video and uploaded it on social media platforms.
Two FIRs were filed against the right-wing organization by the All Assam Minority Students’ Union and the North-East Minorities Students’ Union.
According to the FIRs, a group of men claiming to be members of the right-wing group stopped an autorickshaw and beat up the people travelling in it and forced them to utter slogans like ‘Jai Shri Ram’, ‘Pakistan Murdabad’ and ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’.
