    Manipur landslide: 12 more bodies recovered; Toll Rises to 20

    Digital Desk: As many as 12 more bodies, including eight Army soldiers and four civilians, were found during the search operation from the site of the landslide incident at Tupul in Manipur on Friday.

    “During the search on July 1, the mortal remains of eight more  Territorial Army and four more civilians were recovered. “So far, the bodies of 15 Territorial Army troops and five civilians have been recovered,” the Indian army stated.

    Meanwhile, the Indian army, in collaboration with the Assam Rifles, the Territorial Army, the SDRF, and the NDRF, rescued 13 Territorial Army personnel and five civilians.

    “Mortal remains of Territorial Army personnel are being transported to respective home stations with full military honours.  There will be no halt to the search for 29 civilians and 15 members of the Territorial Army who have gone missing,” the Indian army said. 

    The chief minister of Manipur, N Biren Singh, arrived at the landslide site to encourage the rescue workers.

    The landslide occurred during the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday, near the company location of the Indian Army’s 107 Territorial Army, which was stationed near Tupul Railway Station to protect the under-construction railway line from Jiribam to Imphal.

    According to the North-East Frontier Railway CPRO, the Tupul station building of the ongoing Jiribam - Imphal new line project was damaged by a landslide driven by the nonstop rain.

    On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi discussed the landslide situation in Manipur with Chief Minister N Biren Singh and promised full support of the central government.

    “Spoke to Manipur CM Shri @NBirenSinghJi and reviewed the situation due to a tragic landslide. Assured all possible support from the Centre. I pray for the safety of all those affected. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. May the injured recover soon,” PM Modi tweeted.
