    Manipur landslide: Death toll of Assam residents reaches 15

    Digital Desk: With the recovery of two more dead bodies from the spot, the death toll of Assam residents killed in the landslide at Noney district in Manipur has reached 15, reports said.

    According to reports, at least six people from Assam are still missing.

    The bodies of two Morigaon district residents who were working as construction labourers at the Tupul railway yard building site on Monday were recovered from under the wreckage, officials said.

    The official was quoted by PTI as saying, "The bodies are in a decomposed condition, and the Manipur administration has yet to decide whether the bodies will be sent to Assam or not."

    According to him, numerous authorities are still searching the area for four more district residents who are still missing.

    A Manipur government source reported that three more victims were discovered on Monday, taking the total number of fatalities from the landslide at the railway construction site to 53. Moreover, two of the three bodies were from Assam.

    It is to be noted that the Assam government had compiled a list of 26 people from the state, who were engaged at the Tupul railway yard construction site when the landslide occurred on June 30.

    On July 11, body of a railway engineer was cremated in his hometown.

    The engineer was from Dhubri, whereas 12 of the 15 Assam residents who perished in the landslide were labourers. Among the casualties from the state, there was a Territorial Army jawan from Bajali and another from Nalbari.

    Five Assamese people were saved and are now returned to their houses in Morigaon.

    It may be mentioned that the massive landslide hit the railway construction site on the night of June 30.

    As part of a plan to connect the capitals of all northeastern states to the nation's railway network, construction was already underway in the area for the 110-km Jiribam-Imphal line.
