Guwahati : BJP legislator from Hojai and controversy king Shiladitya Dev slammed media for ‘misrepresenting’ Citizenship Bill in front of the public. Shiladitya Dev has criticized a section of senior Assam-based journalists for “misleading” the people of the state and “misrepresenting” the facts on the Bill issue to fulfill their “vested interests”.
“A section of senior journalists are spreading lies, indulging in cheap politics like Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti leader Akhhil Gogoi and literary critic Hiren Gohain. They (journalists) are misrepresenting the facts on television screen. This will never ensure peace and harmony in the state,” he said while addressing media persons here.
He added, “A section of electronic media journalists are misrepresenting the Bill issue by saying that if it is passed by the Parliament, it would pose a serious threat to the existence of greater Assamese community.”
The MLA further claimed that “not single Hindu Bangladeshi person has entered Assam in the last 10 years.”
“The objective of the Bill is to grant Indian citizenship to the Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christian people who have become victims or religious persecution in Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan. Hence, there is nothing wrong in implementing the Bill,” Dev said.
“The BJP-led NDA government is trying to amend two small things in the Bill. The amendment cannot be a threat to the identity of the indigenous people of Assam,” Hojai MLA further added.
