Shillong: The Meghalaya Government approved the amendment of Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act, 2016 that seeks mandatory registration of outsiders for entering the State. The cabinet stated that the decision was taken in a bid to protect the interest of tribal citizens.
The cabinet approved the amendment of the Act in the form of an ordinance. Any person who is not a resident of Meghalaya and intends to stay in the state more than 24 hours will have to register and furnish documents to the Government. The registration will be done online, informed Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong.
Tynsong also mentioned that any person who fails to comply with the rules and furnish the information will be liable for punishment under section 176/177 of the IPC. However, the employees of the Centre, state and district councils are exempted from the purview of the Act.
