Gohpur : With the Lok Sabha elections round the corner, all candidates across Assam are gearing up for the poll campaigning. New entrant in Assam Pradesh Congress party, MGVK Bhanu is too not behind to raise the poll bugle in his constituency.
MGVK Bhanu visited a total of nine tea gardens in Gohpur on March 8th, 2019 along with announcing the poll bugle for the upcoming elections.
MGVK Bhanu, who retired last year, was a top bureaucrat of Assam from the 1985 batch, expressed a wish to represent the Congress in the ensuing general elections from Tezpur constituency.
The Congress leader, who generally hails from Andhra Pradesh, was seen interacting with the tea garden labourers about the initiatives of the Congress and how the Bharatiya Janata Party “cheated” the tea garden labourers.

Speaking to the media persons at the Purupbari Tea Estate, he said, “The tea garden labourers should receive Rs 391 as daily wage but they are receiving Rs 167 for the last 145 months. The tea garden labourers have been deprived of their rights.”
“Free rice won’t do any good to them (tea garden workers) if they have been deprived of proper wages,” sai d Bhanu while taking to media personnel.
Bhanu has served as the additional chief secretary of the state during Tarun Gogoi’s government as well as secretary and commissioner to the chief minister.
The general elections, 2019 are expected to be held in April and May 2019 to constitute the 17th Lok Sabha. In the last general elections, the Congress won just three seats out of 14 Lok Sabha in the state while the BJP won seven seats.
