Guwahati : Noted award winning Assamese artist Benu Mishra passed away in his residence today in Kahilipara as he was not keeping well for the past few days.
The artist was 80 years old at the time of his death. He was the pioneer of Guwahati Artists’ Guild, formed in 1976, which is now an invaluable platform for artists in the state.
Born in Barpeta in 1939, the late artist has been carrying out his profession in Guwahati since 1946. He studied art at Shantiniketan in West Bengal.
Benu Mishra was vividly known for his extensive use of simplistic artistic details to make illustrative paintings. In one of his art exhibition artist Kishore Kumar Das praised the artist by saying, “Benu Mishra is the master of lines. He draws the lines with confidence and clarity. One characteristic of Mishra’s paintings is that they can tell many things through a few lines,”
Benu Mishra profoundly used the idea of narratives through realm constructs marked by an acute sense of political consciousness and critical reflexivity. In some of his paintings he would ad element of surrealism/magic realism.
