Digital Desk: During a recent press encounter, Phani Bhusan Choudhury, the 8th-term MLA representing Bongaigaon, shared his views on the Asom Gana Parishad's meeting regarding candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. He openly stated that he does not anticipate running in the Lok Sabha elections, and emotional moments capturing his tearful expression were captured on camera.
Amid buzz on the meeting for selecting candidates and his candidature in AGP for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, Phani, mentioning his seniority in the Asom Gana Parishad party, said, “If the party (AGP) releases candidate list without consulting me, then it would be a great pain for me.
He added, “I have worked 38 years for the party, and if the party does not work as I say, then I would think that party is neglecting me. I have sacrificed my whole life for the party, and I believe that party will not make any decision without me.”
He went on to clarify that he learned of the news from other sources and that the party had not notified him of his candidacy or meeting. He also clarified that he has no plan to contest elections and wishes to stay in his constituency.
Having served as the Bongaigaon constituency's representative in the Assam Legislative Assembly for eight straight terms since 1985, he has a notable record. In the Sarbananda Sonowal administration, he served as the Assam government's Minister of Food and Civil Supplies, Consumer Affairs, Pensions, and Public Grievances from 2018 to 2021.
From 1996 until 2001, Phani served as a minister in the Assam Legislative Assembly and as a member of the committee on housing and public undertakings. He was also Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee from 2009 to 2011 and leader of the AGP legislature Party from 2011 to 2016.
