Digital Desk: The Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary under the Guwahati Wildlife Division celebrated World Wetlands Day by focusing on “Wetlands for Our Common Future.” Hadukpar LP School of Mayong participated in the event which Aaranyak organized together with their environmental NGO partner. The Tamuliduva Wetland hosted the program which aimed to promote awareness about important wetland ecology together with wetland conservation initiatives directed at developing environmental awareness among participants who were youth.

Pobitora’s wetlands earned recognition in AWC 2025 with 10,933 water birds from 56 species which showed higher waterbird numbers compared to the previous year’s census of 7,225 waterbirds. The largest wetland of Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary known as Tamuliduva Wetland maintains its position as an essential biodiversity hub of the sanctuary.

The Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary came into existence in 1987 and now covers two main areas of Rajamayong and Pobitora Reserve Forests that extend over 38.85km². Nature preserves within Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary contain hilly forests and grasslands as well as wetlands which serve as homes for 107 one-horned rhinoceroses documented during the 2022 census along with 375 bird species and 22 mammal species and 27 reptiles and 9 amphibians and 39 fish species.

The survey conducted by AWC on January 18, 2025 demonstrated that 80% of observed waterbirds were migratory birds at Pobitora thus demonstrating its importance as a bird conservation site. Biodiversity growth at the sanctuary becomes more evident through these recent studies because environmental protection measures remain essential for safeguarding this distinct ecosystem.
