Relentless Rainfall Triggers Flooding and Disruptions Across Guwahati and Assam
Assam State Disaster Management Authority  issued a public advisory urging residents to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel

Digital Desk: Several areas of Assam, including Guwahati, continue to reel under the impact of relentless rainfall, with two consecutive days of heavy downpours causing severe waterlogging and disruptions in daily life. In Guwahati, low-lying areas face flooding due to blocked roads, clogged drains, resulting in chaos and disruption in daily life.

Earlier, on 28th May, the India Meteorological Department had issued a forecast of heavy to very heavy rain in western and southern Assam. For the next several days, rain, thunderstorms, and powerful winds are expected as the current system, centered over the Bay of Bengal, remains active.

In response, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) urged residents of Guwahati’s flood-prone and hillside areas to be careful and avoid unnecessary travel. The ASDMA asked people in Maligaon, Chandmari and certain parts of Kahilipara to pay extra attention to local flooding or landslide threats because the soil in these areas is weaker in those particular areas.

Districts likely to be affected are Kamrup (Metro and Rural), Barpeta, Goalpara, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Chirang, Hailakandi, and Cachar. These regions may face strong winds, thunderstorms, and potentially damaging rain activity in the next 48 to 72 hours.

In several areas of Guwahati, residents reported ankle to knee-deep water on roads, with local shops forced to shut early. in multiple places, trees were uprooted; however, fortunately,  no one was injured. Authorities in the city have sent teams out to clean up debris and unblock drains as the rain continues to batter the region.
