Post the death of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, as a mark of respect, BJP Dibrugarh MLA Prasanta Phukan demanded renaming of the Bogibeel Bridge as the “Atal Setu”.
It may be noted 16 years ago, on April 21, 2002, former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee inaugurated the construction work and laid the foundation stone of the 4.94 km Bogibeel Bridge over the Brahmaputra by pressing a button at the Chowkindinghee playground in the Dibrugarh, 17 km away from the proposed site.
Vajpayee died at New Delhi’s AIIMS hospital following a prolonged illness on Thursday. He was 93.
The bridge is a combined road and rail bridge over the Brahmaputra river between Dhemaji and Dibrugarh. The bridge, which is touted as the India’s longest rail-cum-road bridge, is likely to be inaugurated towards the end of 2018.
The Bogibeel is the fourth rail-road bridge on the Brahmaputra river in Assam. It may be noted that the Bogibeel bridge was one of several major infrastructural projects to be set up in Assam in accordance with the Assam Accord.
“The people of the Northeast loves and respects him (Vajpayee). In order to keep alive his memories and as a mark of respect, the Bogibeel bridge should be renamed as Atal Setu,” said Phukan.
In June this year, the MLA inspected the progress of the construction works of the Bogibeel bridge project.
The Bogibeel bridge was granted a national project status due to the slow progress by the Government of India in 2007.
