    Sales of luxury brand liquor generate 70 per cent of the excise revenue in Assam
    In contrast of the government's claims, the tax rise on alcohol in the top section was actually between 50 and 65 percent.

    Digital Desk: In the fiscal year 2021–2022, the Assam excise department made Rs. 1930 crore, with the sale of premium liquor accounting for 70% of revenue.

    30% of the excise department's revenue comes from the sale of other brands including elegant, premium, and classic premium.

    Every month in Assam, the excise agency receives about Rs 150 crores in income from the sale of alcoholic beverages.

    There is a significant market demand for luxury brand liquor, which unquestionably contributed 70% of the excise department's overall revenue, according to a statement from a top officer in the department.

    The official stated that the department generated total revenue of Rs 1930 Crore in the financial year 2021–22, Rs 2,030 Crore in the financial year 2020–21, and Rs 1,639 Crore in the year 2019–20.

    The luxury brand of liquor ranges from: 

    Elegant Brand- Rs 400-600
    Premium Brand- Rs 600-1000
    Classic Premium Brand- Rs 1000 and above.

    It should be noted that during the lockdown in 2020 due to covid, the price of liquor was increased as the excise department increased the tax. The government declared that a 25% tax was increased on all liquor segments, but in the upper segment it turned out to be about 50 to 65 percent.

    According to reports, the government's move to raise liquor taxes was unplanned.
