SC Contempt charge labeled against Tarun Gogoi by BJP
State Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) charged former chief minister Tarun Gogoi of disrespecting the Supreme Court by making “baseless” allegations against the National Register of Citizens (NRC) updation process in Assam.
In the recent past, Gogoi has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh “to intervene in the matter to prepare a correct NRC including all genuine Indian citizens whose names appeared in the voters list of 2014 and 2016 Lok Sabha and Assembly elections prepared by the Election Commission on the linkage of voters list of 1967”
I the letters, Gogoi also expressed apprehension that names of many genuine citizens will be left out in the final draft of the NRC which will be published on June 30.
State BJP president Ranjeet Kumar Dass told media that if Gogoi has any complaint, he should bring it to the notice of the Supreme Court- which is supervising the updation process. Dass stated that neither Modi nor Singh has anything to do with the NRC updation process and since it is being monitored by the apex court, they cannot intervene. “This is contempt of the Supreme Court,” said Dass.
Under the supervision of the Supreme Court, the NRC is being updated by the Registrar-general of India (RGI) through the NRC state coordinator.
The NRC contains names of Indian citizens of Assam. The NRC was prepared in 1951, after the Census of 1951.
