Digital Desk: In a major pursuit for a self-reliant Assam, the Finance Budget 2025, introduced by the Finance Minister Ajanta Neog on March 10, aims to boost self-sufficiency in egg, pork and fish production in the state. As the state is heavily dependent on other states in poultry sector, the government's recent budget is expecting to bridge the gap between demand and supply of poultry products in order to make the state self-reliant.
The Assam government will introduce a Pure-line Pig Breeding Programme and a Pig Artificial Insemination Mission. To promote these programmes, the finance minister announced plans to import a pig breed from Canada for genetic upgradation of the local pig population at Rs 11 crore budget.
The government has also set aside a sum of Rs 24 crore to increase egg production and implement commercialisation policy of the poultry sector.
The state will set up a committee for the research to initiate further steps for the achievement of fish, pork, and egg production through self-sufficiency.
During her speech in budget session, Ajanta Neog added that three pet care hospitals will be functional in various places of the state, Guwahati, Bokakhat, and Dibrugarh by October 2025. She further said that four multi-care veterinary hospitals are under construction in Kamrup, Golaghat, Lakhimpur, and Tinsukia, with the fifth hospital is being initiated in Sivasagar.
