DU Ragging Case: Three individuals were arrested for ragging at the Dibrugarh University

Anand Sarma, a junior-year student in the University's commerce department, allegedly leapt off the second floor of the dormitory...

Digital Desk: On Sunday night, Dibrugarh Police nabbed three senior-year students in connection with a ragging incident at Dibrugarh University that left a junior-year student in critical condition.

Simanta Hazarika, Niranjan Thakur, and Pranjit Baruah, all residents of Padmanath Gohain Baruah Students' Hostel, were identified as the three older students held in connection with the crime.

This comes after Anand Sarma, a junior-year student in the University's commerce department, allegedly leaped off the second story of the dormitory to escape a savage assault by seniors in the guise of ragging, seriously hurting himself.

He was brought to a near hospital, where he is still fighting for his life and being closely monitored.

According to sources, Sarma was joined by two other juniors who were victims of ragging. Following the incident, the victim's family filed a report, and the accused were taken into custody.

The incident has been reported to university officials, including the anti-ragging task force, and an inquiry into the events leading up to it has begun.

Meanwhile, reports said that another culprit included in the FIR, a former university student, was still residing in the dormitory. He was not, however, among those apprehended by the police.

Furthermore, ragging is highly common at Dibrugarh University, according to sources, with university authorities having already issued warnings on multiple occasions. However, the lack of meaningful steps resulted in the disappointing episode.

Following the horrifying occurrence, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma moved to Twitter to condemn it and urge for an end to ragging.

Assam CM took to Twitter and said, "It has come to notice that a Dibrugarh University student is hurt in an alleged case of ragging. A close watch was maintained and follow-up action was coordinated with the district admin. Efforts on to nab the accused, the victim being provided medical care".

"Appeal to students, say NO to Ragging," he stated.

The victim now is currently being treated in a private hospital.
