Vocal about Bodo people’s welfare UBPO extended open support to BJP ahead of elections

The UBPO is optimistic about the Chief Minister’s support for elevating education in BTR and other Bodo-populated areas

Digital Desk: The organisation vocal about Bodo People’s welfare outside the BTR area, United Bodo People's Organisation (UBPO), has extended support to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Addressing a press conference at Dispur Press Club, UBPO leaders expressed their optimistic view of the BJP, citing the Tripartite Bodo Accord, a peace treaty signed on January 27, 2020, as the reason for their support, which became possible under the BJP government.

The organisation informed the media that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has assured the organisation to identify and include new villages (outside the BTR area) under the Bodo Kachari Welfare Autonomous Council, along with holding council elections.

The UBPO is optimistic about the Chief Minister’s support for elevating education in BTR and other Bodo-populated areas. They are hopeful of “provincialization of schools in BTR and upgradation of schools in Bodo-populated areas outside BTR.”

“The government has assured to carry out development work in the Bodo-dominated areas of Biswanath and Sonitpur districts,” they further mentioned.

Clause 6.1 of the treaty states that Bodos living in Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao should be granted the designation of ST (Hills).

The government should also preserve the land rights of tribal people residing beyond Tribal Belts and Blocks in non-BTR areas, as stated in Clause 7.1. According to Clause 7.2, all Government Khas land and grazing reserves must be free of encroachment.
