Guwahati : Incessant rain accompanied with severe gale and thunderstorms has been playing a spoilsport to campaigns for the Lok Sabha elections in Assam. The parties and candidates were finding it difficult to arrange meetings as most of the fields were water logged.
Either the parties were canceling their meetings or postponing. Due to the erratic weather prevailing in Assam the use of the helicopter was not allowed and the political parties were forced to make the journey by road.
Ripun Bora, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president was forced to travel by road to attend the election campaigns at Gohpur, Behali and Biswanath Chariali after his helicopter was not able to fly due to the rainfall.
A number of public meetings were also cancelled when the electioneering for the first phase of the Lok Sabha polls in Assam is at the final stages. Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal had to cancel a meeting at Juria due to water-logging at the venue. Sonowal addresses two rallies in Jorhat on April 7th, 2019 despite rains playing havoc. Both the rallies were delayed by about two hours due to continuous rain.
Similar case happened with Assam’s Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and BJP President of Assam state Ranjit Das when both had to cancel their respective meetings due to the bad weather. While Himanta canceled his trip to Tezpur and Ranjit Das canceled his Majuli meet.
