SC/ST students’ hostel in Ghaziabad being turned into detention centre for foreigners

Ghaziabad: Uttar Pradesh’s first detention centre for foreigners will be set up in Ghaziabad, a report said on Thursday. An SC/ST students’ hostel in Ghaziabad’s Nandgram is being turned into the detention centre.

The detention centre will house all such detainees, who are foreigners and booked for violating the Passport (Entry into India) Act, 1987, and Foreigners Act, 1946. The Ghaziabad detention centre will be the 12th such centre in India.

“It is very disappointing and condemnable to convert multi-storeyed Dr Ambedkar SC/ST Hostel, which was built by the BSP government in Ghaziabad, into Uttar Pradesh’s first detention centre for ‘illegal foreigners’. This is one more proof of the government’s anti-Dalit working style. The BSP urges the government to withdraw this order,” tweeted Mayawati.
