    Boxing World Championship: Shiva Thapa enters quarterfinals

    Belgrade: Assam boxer Shiva Thapa managed to qualify for the quarterfinal match in the ongoing boxing world championship. Five-time Asian medalist Thapa (63.5kg) is just one step away from becoming the first Indian male boxer to get two world championship medals.





    The 27-year-old player Indian boxer beat France's Lounes Hamraoui 4-1 in a late-night competition in the pre-quarterfinals. He will face Turkey's Kerem Oezmen for his next match.





    Previously, Thapa won a bronze medal for the nation in the 2015 edition of the tournament in Doha.





    He was the only Indian boxer to record a win on Monday, following four others. Others included Asian silver-medallist Deepak Bohria (51kg), who dropped out of the game.





    Meantime, India's Akash Kumar (54kg) will face Venezuela's Yoel Finol in the quarterfinals. At the same time, Narender Barwal (over 92kg) will face Azerbaijan's Mohamed Abdullayev.





    Nishant Dev (71kg) will face Russia's Vadim Musaev, and Asian champion Sanjeet (92kg) will face Italy's Aziz Abbes Mouhiidine.





    The gold medalists will receive USD 100,000, while the silver medalists will get USD 50,000. In addition, each bronze medalist will get USD 25,000.





    India is being represented in the boxing world championship by its best boxers.
