Digital desk: Hobart Hurricanes cricketer Nikhil Chaudhary has entered a plea of not guilty to the rape of a woman in Townsville, Queensland, while another cricketer in the Big Bash League is charged with raping a lady in his car after meeting her at a nightclub in Townsville.

On Monday, the opening day of his trial, the Hurricanes all-around player entered a not-guilty plea, according to a Townsville Bulletin story. Nikhil Choudhary relocated to Australia six months ago from his native India. He worked as a postman and in a restaurant while he was playing cricket.

In the Ranji Trophy, the premier domestic cricket competition in India, he represented Punjab. While playing with well-known players like Yuvraj Singh and Shubman Gill, he received coaching from Harbhajan Singh.

He took a vacation to Australia in 2020 but returned home because of the COVID-19 pandemic. He started playing cricket for the Northern Suburbs District Cricket Club during his extended stay in Brisbane.

He was chosen for the Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League at the end of 2023 based on his performance in club cricket. On Monday morning, the 12-member jury chose him as a backup 13th player. The participants were chosen via election.

The trial before Judge John Coker and a jury is expected to last three days and Choudhary will be represented by defense barrister Claire Grant.
