Digital Desk: Former India opener Gautam Gambhir has taken a swipe at the broadcasters of the ODI World Cup 2023, accusing them of excessively focusing on Virat Kohli ahead of the much-anticipated India vs New Zealand semifinal clash. Despite Team India's impeccable performance, having not lost a single game in the tournament, Gambhir expressed concern over what he believes is an undue emphasis on the former captain.
Virat Kohli stands as the highest run scorer of the ODI World Cup 2023, amassing an impressive 594 runs with seven 50-plus scores. However, Gambhir argued that the constant spotlight on Kohli by broadcasters is akin to doing his public relations, overshadowing the collective team effort. His remarks, captured in an old video, have unexpectedly gone viral on social media just ahead of the crucial semi-final.
In the video, Gambhir highlighted the importance of acknowledging the entire team's efforts, stating, "If I talk about me all day and if I don’t talk about your performance, then you will automatically become underrated. We have not won the ICC tournament for so long because we are so obsessed with individuals."
India's journey to the semi-final has been historic, becoming the first team to go undefeated in the round-robin format, winning all nine games. In their latest clash, they defeated the Netherlands by a massive 160 runs. Only two teams have previously achieved a similar feat in the Cricket World Cup: West Indies in 1975 and 1979 and Australia in 2003 and 2007.
As the cricketing world eagerly awaits the semi-final showdown, Gambhir's critique has sparked a broader conversation about the balance between individual brilliance and the collective effort required for a team's success.
