    Guwahati Premier Football League to kick off on Sunday

    Digital Desk: The newly launched Guwahati Premier Football League (GPFL), which will begin at the city's Judges Field on Sunday, will include 14 clubs competing for honours. The event will be attended by Minister of Sports and Youth Welfare Nandita Gorlosa, in addition to Assam's main Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who will attend as the main guest.

    “We have recently decided to separate office teams from the GSA Football League and also to introduce a new competition for them,” GSA General Secretary Devajit Saikia said in a statement to the media this afternoon.

    A total of 14 teams are set to compete in the first Guwahati Premier Football League, which will feature two of the state's elite office sides—ASEBSC and OILFC—as well as ISL squad NEUFC. In the first game, which kicks off at 1:15 pm, NRL will play NFRSA. 

    There will be two matches from December 18 and kick-off times of these matches are 2:45 pm and 5 pm (under flood-lights).” He also added, “All 14 teams are divided into two groups of seven teams each.

    The league round will run through January 5; the top two teams in each group advance to the semi-finals, which are most likely to take place on January 7 and 8.“ 

    Sunrise Club and Maharana AC notified GSA of their inability to compete owing to certain unavoidable issues, even though the winners and runners-up of the GSA 'A' Division Football League received direct entrance into the competition.

Perhaps the biggest financial prize for a football match in the city, Rs 15 lakh will go to the winner, while Rs 10 lakh will go to the runners-up.

    Each of the semifinal losers will receive Rs 2.5 lakh. Individual prizes will also be awarded. The GSA's CEO, Munin Nobis, and other office bearers were present during the media briefing along with President Paresh Chandra Das. At a celebration on Saturday night, the Guwahati Sports Association will reveal the Guwahati Premier League trophy. The venue for the event is the Gauhati Town Club.

    Teams in each group: Group: ‘A’-NEUFC, NFRSA, NRL, FCI, DBI, G Plus Athletics, and Young Amateur Club. Group ‘B’: OILFC, ASEBSC, United Chirang Duar FC, Assam Police, Pride East Maaverics, Gauhati Town Club and Barekuri FC.
