Digital Desk: Dipa Karmakar, an Indian star gymnast, chose Independence Day to slam the Sports Authorities for failing to be transparent about her disqualification from the Hangzhou Asian Games despite winning the trials.
Dipa won the trials in Bhubaneswar on the 11th and 12th of July and was part of the initial roster provided to the Asian Games organisers before the 15th of July deadline, but she was later dropped for failing to meet the sports ministry's standards.
"To my surprise, despite topping the national trials and meeting the @IndiaSports selection criteria, it appears that I will be deprived of the opportunity to participate in the @19thAGofficial," she claimed.
"Worse, the reasons for this decision are unknown to me and have not been officially communicated." Instead, my fellow gymnasts and I have to read about our exclusion from the Olympics in the press," she continued.
On July 10, the selection criteria stated, "In individual events during the last 12 months before the commencement of the event (Asian Games), the performance of the sportspersons should not be less than the performance achieved by the eighth position holder of the 2018 Asian Games in measurable sports."
Dipa, on the other hand, had been impeded by injuries and a drug prohibition and had been unable to compete in any of the competitions in previous years.
The Gymnastics Federation of India had urged last week that the Sports Ministry look into Dipa's issue after she was eliminated from the final list of the women's gymnastics squad due to her unusual situation.
"Dipa has transformed Indian gymnastics. She has not competed in the last few years due to injuries and a doping suspension, but we must acknowledge that she has topped the trials," GFI selection committee chairman Ashok Sahoo stated.
"We have written to the SAI (Sports Authority of India) to inquire about Dipa's case, and she is likely to be granted relief." "We're pretty confident about it," he added.
Sudhir Mittal, the president of the GFI, also expressed his support for Dipa, claiming that she met the requirement and was a "medal prospect."
