Digital Desk: In a resounding comeback, the Indian men's hockey team has secured the third spot in the latest world rankings released by the International Hockey Federation (FIH) on Monday. This achievement comes after over a year since India dropped out of the top three in May 2022. The remarkable elevation in rankings is attributed to their unbeaten performance in the Asian Champions Trophy 2023, held in Chennai last month.

The Indian squad, displaying stellar form, clinched victory in six out of seven matches while drawing one, solidifying their position in the top three. England, previously occupying the third spot, faced a slip in the rankings despite their strong run to the EuroHockey final where they narrowly lost to the Netherlands with a score of 1-2. Their earlier loss to Belgium in the tournament, coupled with the final defeat, saw them fall to the fourth position.

Meanwhile, the Netherlands continues to lead the pack with a total of 3113 points, showcasing a strong defense of their title at the EuroHockey Championships. Their domination extends to their recent victories in the FIH Hockey Pro League and securing a bronze medal at the FIH Hockey World Cup in 2023. Belgium holds the second position with 2989 points, closely trailing the Netherlands.

Germany and Australia maintain their fifth and sixth positions in the rankings, with 2689 and 2544 points, respectively. Argentina climbed one spot to seventh with 2350 points, edging ahead of Spain, who sits in eighth place with 2347 points.

In the women's rankings, the Netherlands continues their dominance by securing the top spot with 3422 points, further solidifying their status as a hockey powerhouse. Australia and Argentina maintain their positions in second and third place, with 2818 and 2767 points, respectively.

Belgium made significant strides in the women's rankings following their silver medal win at the EuroHockey Championships, propelling them to fourth place with 2609 points, ahead of Germany in fifth place with 2574 points.

The Indian women's team also made progress, climbing one spot to the seventh position with 2325 points. This rise came at the expense of Spain, who dropped to the eighth position with 2173 points following their sixth-place finish in the EuroHockey Championships, which saw them lose ranking points due to defeats against Belgium and Scotland.

New Zealand and Japan maintain their ninth and tenth spots, while China closely trails Japan in the 11th position with 1894 points.

Overall, these rankings reflect the dynamic nature of international hockey and the ever-changing fortunes of the world's top teams as they compete on the global stage.
