IND vs AFG: Rohit Sharma's record-shattering hundred takes him past Sachin Tendulkar and Kapil Dev

After failing to score against Australia in India's opening match in Chennai, the player appeared to be in terrific form for a spectacular hit against Afghanistan. 

Digital Desk: Rohit Sharma smashed a record-breaking century against Afghanistan in the ICC World Cup 2023 in Delhi's Arun Jaitley Stadium on Wednesday, October 11. With his seventh century, Rohit not only overtook Kapil Dev to record India's fastest ODI World Cup century but also broke Sachin Tendulkar's significant record for most centuries in ODI World Cup history.

Kapil set the previous mark in 1983 in England during the World Cup when he scored a century in 72 balls against Zimbabwe. Rohit broke the record with a 63-ball hundred. In addition, the Men in Blue were able to comfortably chase down a challenging 273-run mark against Afghanistan in their second World Cup 2023 match thanks to the Indian captain's 31st ODI century.

He scored a fifty in 30 balls to become the joint-fastest player in ODI World Cup history to reach 1,000 runs. After shattering his third maximum of the day, he also broke Chris Gayle's record for the most international sixes and went on to demolish two more significant records.

The previous record for the most hundreds in an ODI World Cup match owned by both Rohit and Sachin. In 44 ODI World Cup innings, Sachin scored six hundreds, whereas Rohit took just 19 to pass the famous Indian batter. Five of Rohit's seven hundreds occurred in the 2019 World Cup, and one occurred in the 2015 tournament. Additionally, he easily smashed Kapil's 40-year-old record for the fastest ODI World Cup hundred, setting a significant achievement for India.
