IND vs NZ: Shubman Gill becomes youngest batter to hit double hundred in ODI cricket history

Gill recorded his second consecutive century after smashing a century against Sri Lanka in the third One-Day International in Thiruvananthapuram, solidifying his position as one of the most effective batsmen in the game.

Digital Desk: Shubman Gill created history on Wednesday as he became the fifth Indian and the youngest player to ever achieve a double century in an ODI. At the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, during India's One-Day International match against New Zealand, he also set a new record for the fastest Indian to score 1000 ODI runs.

Gill became the fastest Indian and joint-second quickest player to 1,000 ODI runs when he scored 106 in his 19th innings, passing Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan (24 innings). He came close to equaling Fakhar Zaman's record of the quickest to 1,000 ODI runs in 18 innings by breaking Iman-ul-record Haq's of breaking the 1,000-run scorer in 19 innings.

Fastest to 1000 runs by innings

    • Fakhar Zaman in 18 innings
    • Shubman Gill in 19 innings
    • Iman-ul-Haq 19 innings
    • Viv Richards 21 innings

After hitting a century against Sri Lanka in the third One-Day International in Thiruvananthapuram, Gill recorded his second straight century, securing his spot as one of the most productive batters in the game.

When Shubman Gill, playing for India against South Africa in a three-match series, became the nation's first player to score 500 runs in One-Day Internationals, he made history. In contrast to Janneman Malan of South Africa, who did it in just seven innings, he reached the milestone in 10 innings.

Shubman Gill just achieved the incredible feat of beating Virat Kohli's record by just two days to become the youngest Indian to hit 150 or more in a One-day International. In the 2012 Asia Cup match against Pakistan, Kohli scored 183 runs at the age of 23 years, 134 days.
