Digital Desk: The Indian women’s cricket team triumphed over Pakistan by seven wickets in their opening Group A match of the Women’s Asia Cup T20 2024 at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium in Sri Lanka on Friday. This victory propels India, currently ranked third in the women’s T20 cricket rankings, to the top of Group A with two points from one match.

World No. 8 Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat first, but their innings quickly unraveled as they were bundled out for 108 in 19.2 overs. Sidra Amin was the top scorer for Pakistan with 25 runs, while Indian all-rounder Deepti Sharma was the standout bowler, taking three wickets.

India's chase was anchored by a dominant opening partnership between Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma, who put together 85 runs. The Indian team, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, secured the victory with ease.

The Indian bowlers set the tone early, with pacer Pooja Vastrakar dismissing Pakistani openers Gull Feroza and Muneeba Ali in consecutive overs. Pakistan found themselves struggling at 59/4 by the 12th over, with Aliya Riaz and Nida Dar both falling cheaply. The disciplined Indian bowling attack kept Pakistan's scoring rate in check, regularly taking wickets and only allowing Sidra Amin (25 off 35) to offer some resistance.

A late 31-run partnership between Tuba Hassan (22 off 19) and Fatima Sana (22 off 16) helped Pakistan reach a total of 108. Shreyanka Patil and Renuka Singh were the most economical bowlers for India, both returning figures of 2/14, while Deepti Sharma led the wicket-taking efforts with a spell of 3/20.

In response, Indian openers Mandhana and Verma batted aggressively during the powerplay, amassing 57 runs. Mandhana's innings of 45 off 31 balls included five boundaries before she was caught in the 10th over, ending the 85-run stand. Verma followed soon after, stumped for 40 off 29 balls. Despite the quick dismissals of Dayalan Hemalatha (14 off 11), Jemimah Rodrigues and skipper Harmanpreet Kaur steered India to victory with 35 balls to spare.

The Indian women's cricket team will face the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in their next match on Sunday.
