IPL 2024 to be played outside India due to Lok Sabha elections? Here's what we know

Digital Desk: The IPL 2024 schedule may see a significant change. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will have a short amount of time to conduct the Indian Premier League because the T20 World Cup 2024 is scheduled to start on June 4. But the Lok Sabha Elections make things even more difficult. As a result, IPL 2024 will likely commence on March 22 and conclude on May 19. However, the BCCI will likely have to relocate the matches outside of India because the General Elections will take place in several phases during May.

The previous IPL tournament began on March 31 and concluded on May 29. The BCCI, however, will not only be unable to prolong the duration but may also be forced to cut it by 2-3 days as a result of these two key occurrences. The International Cricket Council mandates a minimum two-week break, therefore even though IPL 2023 had a 58-day time frame, the BCCI will need to make sure the final takes place on May 19, which is a Sunday.

"Yes, we are aware of the difficulties involved in the next IPL. The England series is coming up, followed by the general elections and the World Cup in June. However, it's too early to make any plans at all. We are everyone focused on running the World Cup successfully in October. Only in December or January will a decision be made," a BCCI representative informed InsideSport.

There is no room for rescheduling because the Indian Premier League (IPL) has been given the March–May window by the International Cricket Council (ICC). The players will therefore switch to the IPL when the India vs. England Test series concludes on March 11. In addition, India has a match against Sri Lanka scheduled before the T20 World Cup, leaving limited time for extracurricular activities.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will face further restrictions as a result of the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections in May and June. The BCCI was able to successfully avoid the General Election dates in 2019, ensuring that the entire event took place in India. However, the BCCI had to relocate the IPL partially in 2014 and outside of India in 2009 due to security and police protection issues. The Indian board may run into similar situations this time.

"The mismatch between the IPL and election dates is not new. In 2014, we had the complete IPL in India. Therefore, I fail to see why it needs to be removed. But even then, we'll cross the bridge when it's safe to do so. It’s too early. We'll try to keep the tournament going in India and provide players with a little rest before the T20 World Cup," the official added.

United Arab Emirates (UAE) could be a potential venue for some matches if BCCI is unable to conduct the complete tournament in India. Another important choice might be to move the playoff stage or the second part of the tournament to the West Indies or the United States. The T20 World Cup 2024 will be jointly hosted by the US and the West Indies, giving players a fantastic opportunity to adjust to the climate and time zone changes. This move would be favourable.

Through the course of the competition, the latter choice, however, seems highly unlikely. Broadcasters will face difficulties as a result of the time zone disparities, which would also raise operational costs for all teams and the BCCI.
