Digital Desk: What can be more disheartening? if it's true! according to BCCI insiders, India's ODI and Test skipper Rohit Sharma is unlikely to play T20 Internationals again and had addressed his future in the shortest format before the commencement of the 50-over World Cup.
Again a great blow to the hitman fans, since his India's T20 World Cup semi-final exit in November 2022, Rohit hasn't played a single game in the shortest format. Since then, Hardik Pandya has primarily commanded the Indian squad in T20Is.
The 36-year-old India captain, Rohit Sharma has played 148 T20 Internationals, amassing 3853 runs at a strike rate of over 140 and recording four hundreds.
''This is not a new phenomenon. Rohit hasn't played any T20Is in the last year since he has been focused on the ODI World Cup. In this context, he had long discussions with the head of selectors, Ajit Agarkar. He has volunteered to skip the Twenty20 Internationals. It was entirely Rohit's decision,'' a top BCCI source informed PTI on a note requesting confidentiality.
Following Rohit, India has four skilled IPL openers: Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ishan Kishan, and Ruturaj Gaikwad.
Notably, If the younger generation fails to deliver, the selectors or BCCI brass may simply ask Rohit to reconsider his current stance. It's logical that at this point in his career, Rohit would want to control his workload and stay injury-free for the rest of his career.
It will be hard to play three formats and the IPL every year, and with seven Tests scheduled between December 2023 and March 2024, the Indian captain's priority will be red-ball cricket.
Rohit still stands a chance of guiding India to another World Test Championship (WTC) final in 2025, and his individual form in traditional format has been excellent since he began starting for India in 2019.
