Digital Desk: Indian archer Prathamesh Jawkar clinched a silver medal on Sunday in the men's compound archery at the ongoing Archery World Cup Final 2023 in Hermosillo, Mexico.
Jawkar and Mathias Fullerton of Denmark resulted in a tie (148-148) in the gold medal match. This led to a shoot-off among the finalists. As both of the finalist players scored 10 in the shoot-out, the match was very close. However, Mathias Fullerton's arrow was closer to the centre and was announced as the winner.
Earlier, Prathamesh defeated Italian Miguel Becerra by 149–141 in the quarterfinal. The 20-year-old Indian archer defeated Mike Schloesser of the Netherlands 150-149 in the semifinal to go to the final round.
India's performance at Archery World Cup Final 2023
The Indian team's performance at the prestigious Archery World Cup Final has been mixed. Prathamesh Jawkar took home a silver medal, but other archers fell short of expectations.
Abhishek Verma was defeated by Mike Schloesser for the bronze medal in the men's compound event. The Indian archer had earlier defeated American Sawyer Sullivan in the quarterfinal. Later, he was defeated by Mathias Fullerton of Denmark in the semifinal.
Meanwhile, Aditi Swami lost in the quarterfinal of the Archery World Cup Final's women's compound category. It needs to be mentioned that earlier this year, the 17-year-old won the gold medal at the World Archery Championships.
Jyothi Surekha Vennam, another potential Indian archer, was defeated by Colombian Sara Lopez in the quarterfinals. Jyothi was a member of the women's compound team at the 2023 World Archery Championships that claimed the gold medal. At the competition in Berlin, Germany, the 27-year-old also won bronze in the individual compound event.
However, the Indian archers (compound and recurve) will aim to put on a strong performance at the future Asian Games in Hangzhou in 2023. For the recurve archers, the Asian Games will be especially important because they will have the chance to earn spots in the Paris Olympics 2024.
