Digital Desk: The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has rejected wrestler Vinesh Phogat's petition to be awarded a joint silver medal from the Paris Olympics. This decision came a day after CAS had extended the deliberation period on Phogat's silver medal case, postponing the verdict to August 16, Friday.
Phogat was disqualified from competing in the 50kg weight class final for being 100 grams over the weight limit and subsequently announced her retirement from the sport. However, with support from the Indian Olympic Association, she sought a joint silver medal through the CAS. Currently, Sarah Hildebrandt of the USA has been awarded gold, while Yusneylis Guzman Lopez, whom Phogat defeated in the semi-finals, competed for the gold medal against Hildebrandt and claimed silver.
In the repechage rounds, Yui Susaki of Japan, who lost to Phogat in the first round, defeated Oksana Livach of Ukraine to secure bronze.
Additionally, Feng Ziqi of China won the other bronze medal by defeating Otgonjargal Dolgorjav.
Phogat, her legal team, and the Indian Olympic Association argued that she was under the weight limit on the first day of the competition, when she advanced to the 50kg final. Had her appeal been successful, she would have received a joint silver medal with Yusneylis Guzman Lopez.
