Digital Desk: Virat Kohli of India reached another significant career milestone by being the fastest player to reach 25,000 runs in international cricket. On Day 3 of the second Test match in New Delhi against Australia, he achieved it. In the process, Kohli surpassed Sachin Tendulkar, his hero and the Master Blaster, who had accomplished the feat in 577 games. Virat, in contrast, did it in 549 games. Ricky Ponting (588), Jacques Kallis (594), Kumar Sangakkara (608), and Mahela Jayawardene (608), among others, follow Virat and Sachin (701).
After Indian openers KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma left the crease early, Kohli took his position. While Rohit got off to a strong start and lost his wicket due to a mix-up with Cheteshwar Pujara, Rahul could only score one run, continuing his poor form.
He made a few spectacular shots and made it plain that he intended to fast end the run-chase. However, just as Kohli appeared to be in control, Todd Murphy outplayed him and dismissed the former India captain for 20 runs off 31 balls.
When Australia was skittled out for 113 in their second innings earlier in the game, India's spin twins Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja put on an electrifying performance, including a seven-for by the latter, which gave the hosts a target of 115 runs to take an unbeatable 2-0 series lead.
India had a score of 14/1 at the break, with captain Rohit Sharma (12*) and Cheteshwar Pujara (1*) on the field.
At 61/1, Australia resumed their innings in an effort to extend the visitors' lead. Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne both contributed 39 runs.
Early in the session, Ashwin scored for the home team by removing a threatening Head for 43 off 46 balls and dropping Australia to 65/2.
Thereafter, the team of Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne advanced the innings by scoring 20 more runs before Ashwin removed Smith for only 9 runs. Australia had scored 85/3 after 19 overs.
