Virat Kohli talks about his frustration over Lean Patch; Says, 'I Was Very Cranky, It Was Not Fair On Anushka'

With two centuries in the space of a month, Kohli is back to his best after suffering through a dry spell over the past few seasons.

Digital Desk: Star Indian cricketer Virat Kohli opened up on his frustration during the trying times recently in his career. In a conversation with international teammate and close friend Suryakumar Yadav, Kohli shared his experience of tough time when he was struggling for good form.

With two centuries in the space of a month, Kohli is back to his best after suffering through a dry spell over the past few seasons. He talked openly about how his on-field troubles changed his behaviour and how it affected his loved ones, including wife and Bollywood star Anushka Sharma.

When his form began to falter, Kohli admitted to Yadav that "frustration started seeping in," that his game was "extremely far away," and that "desires and detachments had entirely taken over." The All-Star hitter claimed that he had come to terms with the fact that his "denial" had resulted in irritability and impatience, which was unfair to everyone around him, especially Anushka Sharma.

Using Suryakumar Yadav as an example, Kohli stated, "Well, I said this in the post-match presentation as well. People may occasionally adopt a different perspective toward you. People now anticipate Surya's behaviour when he walks outside to play. It takes a lot of effort to keep up with it. When you play cricket well, have good form, and everything else is going smoothly, sometimes that's what happens."

“But in my case, frustration set in when it dipped a little. Because I wanted to play in the same way and people want me to, I play this way, I should play this way, and I will have to play this way,” he continued.

I was unable to play that way in cricket, though. For me, the era was distinct. My game was far away due to this because it was located there. As a result of the complete takeover by my desires and attachments.

"At that point, I understood I couldn't stay away from who I am. I must stay true to who I am. I have to face the fact that, even when I'm weak and playing poorly, I'm the worst player in the room. I cannot maintain my denial. Because I was in denial, which wasn't good at all, a lot of frustration was sneaking in and I was becoming quite irritable and snappy in my own space. I didn't think it was just the people surrounding me. Anushka, my dear friends. To keep seeing you there is unfair to those who are always there for you and who support you. I had to accept responsibility and put things in perspective," the former skipper added.

"Thereafter, when I returned for the Asia Cup in a relaxed state, I began to appreciate the practice. I once more enjoyed working out. I have always played cricket in this manner. What I will suggest is that if you start to feel a little desperate, always take two steps back instead of continuing to push. Because everything will start to fade away from you at that point," Kohli said.
