New Delhi: Indian cricket star Yuvraj Singh was arrested by Hansi Police in Haryana for an alleged casteist remarks case on Saturday. However, he was later released on interim bail.

Notably, Yuvraj was arrested for his derogatory remark against Yuzvendra Chahal in an Instagram chat with Rohit Sharma in June 2020.

The FIR was lodged by Hansi – based lawyer and activist Rajat Kalsan at the Hansi police station in Hisar. In the FIR, Kalsan alleged that Yuvraj’s comment had hurt the sentiments of the Dalit community.

Police have filed the FIR under Sections 153, 153a, 295, 505 of IPC, besides sections 3 (1) (r) and 3 (1) (s) of SC/ST Act. Notably, the FIR comes eight months after an advocate from Hisar filed a police complaint against the cricketer for his casteist remark.

Meanwhile, Hansi SP Nitika Gahlout informed the media that the cricketer had joined the investigation as per the court order and the police are in possession of his phone.

Clarifying about his alleged derogatory comment, the 39-year-old Indian cricketer twitted, “This to clarify that I have never believed in any kind of disparity, be it on the basis of caste, colour, creed or gender. I have given and continue to spend my life for the welfare of people. I believe in the dignity of life and respect each individual without exception.”

In another Tweet he said, “I understand while I was having a conversation with my friends, I was misunderstood, which was unwarranted. However, as a responsible Indian I want to say that if I have unintentionally hurt anybody’s sentiments or feelings, I would like to express regret for the same.”

Notably, Yuvraj Singh retired from all forms of cricket in 2019 but has taken part in a few overseas leagues post-retirement over the last couple of years.
