    Asian Boxing Championships 2022: Lovlina Borgohain of India advances quickly to the semifinals

    Desk: In a 3-2 split decision, Kazakhstan's Valentina Khalzova, the 2016 world
    champion, was defeated by Tokyo 2020 bronze medalist Lovlina Borgohain to
    advance to the women's 75 kg semi-finals at the Asian Boxing Championships 2022
    in Amman, Jordan.



     



    The
    victory also guaranteed the Indian boxer at least a bronze medal at the present
    competition. At the Asian Boxing Championships in 2017 and 2021, Lovlina
    Borgohain took home bronze medals.



     



    In
    addition to Lovlina Borgohain, four more Indian boxers who prevailed in their
    individual quarterfinal matches also secured medals.



     



    In
    the quarterfinals of the women's 63kg division, World Championships bronze
    medalist Parveen defeated Thailand's Panpatchara Somnuek 5-0 before Ankushita
    Boro blanked Japan's Tsubata Arsia in the women's 66kg division.



    Minakshi
    (women's 52 kg) and Preeti (women's 57 kg), both competitors for the first
    time, qualified for the semifinals after defeating Irish Magno of the
    Philippines and Turdibekova Sitora of Uzbekistan, respectively.



     



    Minakshi
    made a powerful entrance by throwing a barrage of blows. Magno was eventually
    defeated 4-1 by the Indian fighter.



     



    Preeti,
    the Asian Youth Boxing champion for 2021, put on a strong effort against
    Turdibekova Sitora to earn a 5-0 decision victory.



    In
    the semifinals on November 9, Minakshi will now compete against Mongolia's
    Lutsaikhan Altantsetseg, Preeti will compete against Japan's Irie Sena, and
    Parveen will compete against Mongolia's Uranbileg Shinetsetseg.



     



    Hsiao-Wen
    Huang of Chinese Taipei, who won the bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics,
    beat Sakshi (women's 54 kg) 5-0 in the other quarterfinal match. Pooja lost to
    Dariga Shakimova of Kazakhstan 5-0 in the women's 70 kg division.



     



    Up
    to seven Indian boxers, including Shiva Thapa (63.5 kg), a five-time Asian
    medallist, and CWG 2022 bronze medalist Mohammed Hussamuddin (57 kg), will
    compete in the quarterfinals on Sunday.



     



    Simranjit, who won the bronze medal at the 2018 World
    Championships, will compete against Yeonji Oh of Korea, who won the gold medal
    at the Asian Games and two more gold medals in the region.



    267 boxers from 27 major boxing nations are taking part in the
    competition.
