CWG 2022: Weightlifter Achinta Sheuli bags 3rd gold for India, lifts record 313kg

The lifter from Kolkata began with a 166kg lift, which he easily lifted, then entered the clean and jerk with a five kilogramme advantage.

Digital Desk: India’s 20-year-old weightlifter, Achinta Sheuli, smashed the Games record by lifting a total of 313kg to win the gold medal in the men's 73kg category at the Commonwealth Games 2022.

Sheuli recorded twice in the Snatch round, lifting 140kg and 143kg, breaking the Games record. Then, in the clean and jerk round, he lifted 166 kg and 170 kg to set a Games record for the total weight.

Sheuli lifted 313 kg (143 kg, 170 kg) to win the gold at NEC Hall on Sunday.

Erry Hidayat Muhammad of Malaysia, who gave Sheuli a stiff challenge, came in second place overall. His best effort was 303 kg (138 kg and 165 kg).

Shad Darsigny of Canada, who lifted 298 kg in total, came in third (135 kg, 163 kg).

In the snatch section, Sheuli, a junior world championship silver medalist, performed three clean lifts of 137 kg, 140 kg, and 143 kg.

His 143kg effort helped him smash the Games record and improve his personal best.

The lifter from Kolkata began with a 166kg lift, which he easily lifted, then entered the clean and jerk with a five kilogramme advantage.

Sheuli's 170 kg attempt then failed, but on his third try, he was able to lift the weight and set a new Games record for total lift (313 kg).

The Malaysian tried a 176kg lift in his final two attempts but failed, so the Indian lifter had to wait patiently to find out what medal he'd bring home.

The weightlifting contingent from India has now won six medals overall, with the gold from Sheuli. Jeremy Lalrinnunga, 19, earned the gold medal in the men's 67kg category.
