Digital Desk: Former India captain
Dilip Tirkey, who had been considered the front-runner for the position of
Hockey India president, was elected unopposed on Friday. Hockey India elections
were scheduled for October 1, but the results were announced ahead of time
because there were no candidates for any of the positions, allowing the
incumbent candidates to be elected unopposed under the federation's
Constitution. Tirkey was elected after Uttar Pradesh Hockey chief Rakesh Katyal
and Hockey Jharkhand's Bhola Nath Singh withdrew their nominations for
president on Friday.
Bhola Nath was elected secretary
general unopposed.
The appointments of Tirkey and his
team have been approved by the International Hockey Federation (FIH).
The FIH stated in a letter that when
the number of contesting candidates for any post is equal to or less than the
number of posts, they will be deemed to have been elected unopposed in
accordance with the election by-laws posted on the Hockey India website.
"As a result, we are pleased to note that the Executive
Board of Hockey India has been elected, as announced on the Hockey India
website, and that the posts election was unanimous for all positions," it
said.
