Guwahati : Guwahati’s Sarusajai Stadium is gearing up to host the first Indian Football team’s opening FIFA World Cup Qualifier match. The news has been confirmed by All India Football Federation (AIFF) general secretary, Kushal Das on August 1st, 2019 as per media reports.

The Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium also known by the name Sarusajai stadium will host the first qualifier match where the Indian football team will face Oman in the second round of Asian Qualifiers on September 5th, 2019.
Recently, the Indian football team has been winning many international events, raising their bar as well as improving their international ranking as well. The Sarusajai stadium is located in Lokhra and is the current home ground of Northeast United FC, an Indian professional football club. The stadium has a total capacity of 35,000 which was later reduced o 23,850 due to the installation of bucket seats for the 2017 FIFA under-17 World Cup.

Sarusajai stadium has hosted many sporting events in the past which includes the 33rd National Games of India, South Asian Games.
